30 September 2019
Oriental Port and Allied Services Corporation (OPASCOR), inaugurated its new Finger Pier
Facility. After a year of construction, the facility is now
ready to accommodate general cargo vessels carrying rice, steel, cement, salt
and other bulk cargoes bound for Cebu.
It was a day of realizing a vision into
a reality. Together with over 250 clients and guests, OPASCOR was proud to
celebrate this new milestone for the company.
The Finger Pier is located at the
northern end of the Cebu International Port (CIP). A 1-Billion port facility
constructed in collaboration with the Cebu Port Authority (CPA) to address the
need for more berth and yard space in Cebu’s international port and increase
its operational capacity.
With a berth area of Two Hundred Fifty
(250) Meters, the pier can accommodate two (2) small/medium vessels or one
large vessel. It has a yard space of 7,500 Square Meters capable of stacking an
additional load of 1,050 TEUs of containers, thereby increasing the total
storage capacity of the Cebu International Port (CIP) to more than 10,000 TEUs
at any given time.
At its maximum use, the total annual
capacity of the existing CIP Container Yard is 780,000 TEUs at an average dwell
time of 4.5 days and for the CIP Finger Pier Yard is 120,000 TEUs at an average
dwell time of 3 days.
With the newly constructed Finger Pier,
the current CIP berthing area for foreign cargoes shall be primarily used to service
vessels carrying containerized cargoes, hence it can now accommodate bigger
containerized vessels, or more vessels of the same sizes as those presently
calling at the Cebu International Port.
Also, a ramp is
constructed designed for RORO Vessels or Barges. This is to allow barging as a
viable alternative of transporting cargoes outside of CIP via the sea to avoid
road congestion. The use of waterway hustling as a logistical tool for urban
and countryside distribution of cargoes will complement the existing traffic
grid and further improve port connectivity.
This
project is an evidence that OPASCOR truly delivers its promise of Optimum Quality in Port Services, Always. As
what OPASCOR Chairman and CEO, Atty. Tomas A. Riveral, said “Putting the customers first can reap greater rewards than
short-sighted drive to protect share price”.
OPASCOR
is thankful to the people and organization that made this project possible
namely: Cebu Port Authority, Cebu port stakeholders, BDO Unibank Inc. -
Commercial Banking Division VisMin, the project’s contractor EquiParco
Construction Company, the dedication of all OPASCOR Finger Pier Working
Committee Members, the company’s employees, managers, corporate officers and
Board of Directors headed by Atty. Tomas A. Riveral and above all, upon the
grace and guidance of the Almighty.
